The reports we found named only Layton, Kaysville and Farmington in Davis County, so we do not claim hail fell in other Davis cities. Does hail this size damage a roof?
Hail around quarter size (1 inch) and larger is generally where asphalt shingles start to bruise. It can also knock granules loose and dent vents, gutters and flashing. Stones of 1.25 to 2 inches, like those reported near Layton, are large enough that a roof inspection is a sensible next step. The only way to know for sure is a close look on the roof, which is what our free inspection is for.
Check from the ground (stay off the roof)
- Dents on gutters, downspouts, roof vents, mailboxes or the car
- Granules piling up at downspout outlets
- Dings in siding, window screens or AC fins
- Cracked, creased or missing shingles
- New ceiling stains or attic drips after the next rain

Watch out for storm chasers
After a hail storm, out-of-area crews often knock on doors. Before you sign anything, check the contractor's license with the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), ask for a local address and references, and never sign over your insurance check on the spot.

Frequently asked
Was my Davis County roof damaged by the September 18 hail?
We cannot tell from the reports alone. The National Weather Service logged hail from 0.75 inch up to 2 inches in Layton, Kaysville and Farmington, but hail falls in narrow swaths and damage is often not visible from the ground. A free inspection will show whether your roof has damage.
Is it too late to file a claim for September hail?
Coverage, deductibles and reporting deadlines vary by policy, so check your policy or ask your carrier. Getting the roof inspected and photographed sooner makes the damage easier to document before winter.
Do you inspect roofs in Davis County?
Yes. Our office is in Orem and we serve Davis County, including Layton, Kaysville, Farmington, Bountiful, Centerville, Clearfield and nearby cities. The inspection is free, with photos and a written estimate before any paid work.
Should I check even if hail near me was smaller than 1 inch?
Damage is less likely from smaller hail on a roof in good shape, but older or worn roofs can still be affected. If you saw hail or find dents on gutters, vents or the car, a check is reasonable.
