7 Signs of Hail and Wind Damage on a Utah Roof

7 Signs Your Utah Roof Has Hail or Wind Damage

Storm season in Utah can leave a roof damaged without a single obvious leak. Here are seven signs worth checking after hail or high wind, many of which you can spot safely from the ground.

1. Shingle granules in your gutters or downspouts

Those small, sand-like granules protect shingles from the sun. Hail can knock them loose. A noticeable pile at the bottom of a downspout after a storm is a red flag.

2. Dents or dings on metal surfaces

Check roof vents, gutters, fascia, window screens, garage doors and the AC unit. Dents on these surfaces are a good indicator that hail was large enough to cause roof damage too.

3. Missing, curled or creased shingles

High wind can lift shingles and break their seal, leaving a crease or a missing tab. Binoculars from the yard can help you spot gaps and uneven lines.

4. Bruised or cracked shingles

Hail bruises are often soft spots with a dark or exposed patch where granules have been knocked away. This is hard to judge from the ground, which is why a roof-level inspection matters.

5. Damaged flashing

Flashing around chimneys, skylights, vents and valleys is a common entry point for water. Look for bent, loose or lifted metal.

6. Water stains, drips or musty smells inside

Brown or yellow ceiling stains, bubbling paint, or a damp attic smell can mean water is already getting in. Check the attic after a storm if you can do so safely.

7. Damaged siding, fences or trees

If hail or wind took a toll on the rest of your property, your roof likely took the same hit.

What to do if you spot any of these

  • Stay off the roof. It's slippery and dangerous, especially after a storm.

  • Photograph everything with dates, from the ground and inside the home.

  • Book an inspection before winter. Utah's freeze-thaw cycle can turn a small problem into a big one.

  • Review your insurance policy and its reporting window. Every policy is different.

Beware of door-knockers after a storm

After a big storm, out-of-area crews often go door to door. Before you sign anything, check that a contractor is local, licensed and insured, can provide references, and will give you a written estimate. A reputable roofer won't pressure you to sign on the spot.
